UK based NRN: High concern about Dual Citizenship
Dec 4, 2009
I got an opportunity to visit London just after completion of my committee report and plenary discussion in constituent Assembly in last November, 2009.
In fact that program was organized by care international UK in cooperation with UK parliament caucus on Women, Peace and Security to share Nepal experiences on violence against women, on the occasion of November 25th. After that, I was visiting of the parliamentarian from EU parliamentarian as well. On the very last day, NRN UK organized an interaction program focusing on issue of Dual Citizenship in upcoming constitution of Nepal, among British-gurkha family, living in London.
Most of them were not only unhappy with our report, but also aggressively in against. I could easily feel that how unhappy were they, through their aggressive presentation. After listening all of them, I simply explain about the proposed provision, process of making it and position of different parties in this regards. Then after, they become not only cool and calm, but also somehow frustrated. Reason behind was that they felt have been cheated by high level political leaders that almost all senior level leaders from all parties told them they are in favor of dual citizenship in the different forum and they rely on that. But, not of them know that that is not the institutional position rather just speech for popularity. When, they knew everything in black and white, they got really frustrated.
Finally, they discussed in this matter and decided to go through another round of campaign. They drafted the letter and circulated to all 55 countries and asked them to send CA chair as well as copied to fundamental right and constitutional committee for reference. As chair of the fundamental right committee, almost 2 dozen letters has been received already.
Finally, I received an delegation team led by chair of NRNA in February 14, 2010. After having discussion with him, we made an understanding that wherever we will be visiting; try to have interaction with NRN people in coordination with NRNA. Just following this understanding I am just trying to get them in touch and learn their perspectives.
