About Binda Pandey

My name is Binda Pandey, born on December 30, 1966 at in Nuwakot, a middle hill district of Nepal. I am second last child of Mrs. Bishnumaya Pandey and Mr. Phatta Bahadur Pandey among 3 brother and six sisters. I spent my childhood in village. Then, I moved to Kathmandu to continue my education in 1981.

After constituent assembly (CA) election in April 2008, I was nominated as its member, representing CPN (UML) from PR list and took responsibility with capacity of Chairperson of Fundamental Right and Directive Principle Committee in Constituent Assembly onward January 2009. But, unfortunately the CA dissolved on May 2012 without declaring the long waited “New Constitution”. Later in 2017 I became again a member of the House of Representative of Federal Parliament.

I am proud to say that I was resuming the post of one of the Founder Members of National Women Commission formed by the Government of Nepal in 2002 for two years, serving on women cause through state mechanism.

Organizational Involvement

I was elected as a Central Committee Member of CPN (UML) from the quota of open competition, through its 8th congress conducted in February 2009. I was given the task to manage party central library and documentation for last one year that tenure from June 2013, after dissolving CA. I am proud to say that it is in the new structure as digital cataloging as well as digitalising all the documents of communist movement of Nepal to avail and easily accessible for everyone. In 2015, I was re-elected by 9th congress in July 2014 and became a Politburo member onward 2015. I was given the task as in-charge of Nepali diaspora.

Later in 2021 November, when the 10th congress was conducted, I was upgraded to Standing Committee and taking care of different department in central level. While I was coordinating Economic and Planning Department since 2022. Later in 2024 October, I was raising the issues of party’s ethics, decision making process and good governance, party leadership suspended for six month form responsibility (https://english.khabarhub.com/2024/25/421725/ & https://english.onlinekhabar.com/binda-pandey-the-uncompromising-confident-leader.html).

Before that I was serving as secretary of Central Women Department (CWD) of CPN-UML from 2005 until 2009. I was national council member onward 1999. Going back to the history, I started to be active in party politics onward 1984.

By knowledge, engagement and experiences, I am student, women and trade union right activists since 1980. I became student and women activist as district committee treasurer of All Nepal National Free Student Union (ANNFSU) Nuwakot in 1980. I was founder member of central women department of ANNFSU in 1986. Then, I was elected as central committee member in 1990, just after restoration of multi party democracy, though I was already a member of 10th conference organising committee since 1989.

International Experiences as Trade Unionist 

I was working for Committee For Asian Women (CAW) as Program Coordinator for three years, 1994 June to 1987 August, based in Hong King. Later, I involved in various activities of Global Union Federations (GUFs) and representing in Presidium of ICEM (2004-07), now named as Union Federation of IndustriAll. Later in 2011, I was elected as deputy member of ILO Governing Body, representing Asia pacific. I  remained there for 3-term until 2021.

As a feminist activist, I am a part of SANGAT, a south Asian Feminist network since the beginning and serving as a jury member of the Kamla Bhasin Award onward her demised in 2021.

Education and Publication 

I completed by PhD in 2017 from Kathmandu University on the topic “Empowering Women Participation in Politics through feminist inquiry- A case study of CPN-UML. Before that I did my master from Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok on Gender and Development Studies (2002) and Master in Botany from Tribhuvan University (1997). In addition, I have completed my Bachelor degree in Law and Education as well.

Award Nomination

 

I was one of the 1000 peace women, nominated for Noble Peace Prize in 2005  (https://1000peacewomen.org/en/network/1000-peacewomen). In fact it was a global movement to visualized he women’s contribution to make change in the world.

Recently I am honoured to received AIT-Bangkok Distinguished Alumni Award- 2024 (https://www.aitaa.asia/DAA%26HM).
